Career Advice for Roofers

Article posted by: roofing companies in Denver

Found this great article addressed to roofers seeking a job in the roofing industry written by .

A "roofer" is a general term applied to many of the jobs in roofing. But I'm referring to the workers who are actually tearing off, installing, repairing and/or maintaining various roof systems. That's how many of us in the trade got started.

Roofing is a tough, dirty job that is in the top ten list of most dangerous occupations. Statistically it is even more dangerous than being a police officer or firefighter. Many guys try it out and quickly find they want no part of this work.

But there is something about it that gets in your blood. Those who survive jobs in roofing for a few years often make a career out of it. It's extremely rewarding to tear off an old leaky roof, fix all the rotted wood and install a good-looking roof system that will provide decades of shelter.

Once you learn the basic skills and principles, this is a job that you can take just about anywhere. But there is a big difference in compensation and working conditions from one part of the country to another. Even companies that are cross-town rivals can vary greatly. Here are some of your options...

First off, if you're in a state that gets a lot of snow, you may find that jobs in roofing all but disappear in the winter. The snow and ice makes for miserable and treacherous working conditions. And the material freezes, making it difficult to work with.

Compare that to where I live in South Florida; We can roof year-around and winters are the best time to be on the roof. There are many days when I am overwhelmed with the shear ecstasy of working outside in the warm sun and cool breeze. Even the sweltering summers are tolerable, if you can arrange your schedule to be off the roof during the heat of the day.

Another factor for roofers to consider is the kind of work that a company does. Companies that do a lot of new construction often find themselves in a "feast or famine" situation. When there are lots of new homes and other buildings going up, there is a lot of work. But those jobs in roofing dry up quickly when the economy slows down. Roofers who work for companies that do mostly repairs and reroofing are more likely to have steady work, regardless of economic conditions.

Some companies specialize in just one type of roofing system. But at the start of your career I recommend working for a company that offers a variety of systems. That way, after ten years on the roof, you will have ten years experience, instead of one year of experience -- ten times. You will learn the pros and cons of different types of roofing. After that, if you want to specialize in a particular type, become the best roofer in town in that system.

The highest compensation for roofers is usually through piecework arrangements, rather than by hourly. Just keep your focus on quality over quantity and you will still have work when the "speed demons" are running around looking for a job. Those guys are a dime a dozen and I don't have much use for them. Strive to be fast AND good. Now THAT is impressive!

You should be your own toughest critic. Don't put yourself in the embarrassing position of having your work rejected by your boss, the customer or a building inspector.

Also, be aware that being paid by piecework doesn't automatically qualify you as an independent contractor. There are licensing and tax implications that you need to be aware of. You may get by for a while, but eventually the long arm of the government will catch up with you.

When that happens, the IRS can shut you down, file tax liens on your property and garnish your wages. States like Florida have made a felony out of contracting without a license and can assess heavy fines. You're better off staying on the legal side of the law, whether it's your job or your business.

Being a roofer is one of the jobs in roofing that is greatly affected by immigration. A huge percentage of roofers are either legal or illegal immigrants. Since the wage scale is so low where they come from, they readily work for wages that are half what they should be. Many shady roofing companies are happy to hire them, paying cash under the table and saving even more.

That situation can make it pretty tough on a young roofer trying to earn a decent living legitimately. My best advice is to learn your lessons quickly and be prepared for higher paying jobs in roofing. It's helpful to keep a notebook of what you learn. Talk to the old-timers. Most are happy to share their wisdom with you if you just show them a little courtesy and respect.

And if advancement opportunities don't pan out, you can always start your own company.

A Great Strategy for Selecting A Good Roofer

Selecting roofers can frequently feel aggravating. You do not know anything regarding the company or contractor prior to signing the contract, and you're investing a substantial amount of hard earned cash in them, assuming they'll do the job well. While you can do some investigation prior to employing them to try to receive the best possible company, there are numerous downsides.

The downsides will be there due to the nature of the work; however, you can do a lot to remove some of that concern. First, take time to get more specifics of the roofing business that is taking the job. Get a company card, learn where their exact offices are, and learn everything possible about their identity. It is usually best to employ a business with a solid track record near you. When you are doing your investigation, make certain the business has certification and insurance coverage as needed.

Research a contractor or roofing company before employing them. You may use the Better Business Bureau for businesses that are listed, or you can use critique or review internet websites that permit clients to rate and review their skilled tradesmen, including individuals who are roofers. Read as many reviews as possible; however remember that there will more often than not be somebody who was unsatisfied with a job completed.

Several customers are difficult to satisfy, while other folks might have had unexpected situations around the job, such as a weather event, that they unfairly held the roofers responsible. A good thing to do is take a look at all reviews when coming up with your decision.

Always go through the roofer agreement carefully prior to you signing it, and be sure you comprehend all of the terms it applies. Don't accept spoken claims or warranties. They should be in the contract prior to signing. It is easy to misunderstand anything that is spoken, but not something which is written down you could refer to later. Make sure you are given a copy of the contract once you sign it, and hang on to this for your records along the way.

Never fork out the full sum for the roofing job prior to it being finished. Having to pay around 1 / 3 when you sign the contract is traditional and generally safe; however, if you pay in full, you are at danger of being ripped off. The roofers might take off with your cash without finishing the job, or might perform a poor job.

Since you do not owe them anything, they have no reason to come back and fix the work, apart from protecting their popularity. Make certain you don't pay the full amount until you are totally pleased with the job they've done.

Using these strategies for selecting good roofers is possible with minimum pressure, and will also be assured you have found a good all round company or service provider who will perform the job properly. Spend some time well before you sign, and you will be delighted with the outcomes.

Repairing Roof Tiles and Metal Shingles

One of the reasons home owners use masonry and metal roofing materials is the fact that they last a long time. Even though these roofing systems have a long life, small leaks, broken tiles and dented or damaged metal shingles can still happen. Usually the roof repairs to these materials require little work, however if you have a large leak or major damage from a storm, we recommend contacting a Denver roofers to help with your roof repair. It is better to leave the major problems to experienced roofers, especially for ceremic or concrete tiles.

Repairing Masonry Tiles
Small holes or cracks can be patched with roofing cement on masonry roofing systems. You can handle this type of roof repair on your own. If a tile is cracked (picture below), use a wire brush and clean out the crack before applying the roofing cement. If you have a crack that extends above the overlapping tile above it you should replace the entire tile. To do this, you should gently pry the tile that is above broken tile and remove. Apply roofing cement to area under new tile and slide the new tile into position. If the tile is nailed down, use a hammer to break apart old tile and remove. Remove the nails before applying roofing cement and new tile.

Repairing Metal Shingles
If you find small holes in your metal roofing system, you can patch these with a water resistant caulk. If you have larger repairs or panels that need to be replaced, I recommend calling a Denver roofing company to help you out.

Most metal shingles and panels use an interlocking system so it is important to understand how this works before you try and add or remove the metal pieces. Usually you will need to cut damaged shingles with a tin snips and then modify the way the new shingle will interlock. This can be tricky which is why you may want to leave it to a professional.

To replace a metal shingle cut the damaged one out and trace the old shape into the new shingle so you know it will fit prefectly. Place it into the mates and try and interlock to shingles that are on either side. Seal all edges (4) with silicone water-resistant caulking to ensure it will be water proof.

These roofing materials can be tricky to work with as they both involve an interlocking system. Repairs such as cracks or small holes are easy to fix but a broken or damaged tile can be much more complicated. These roof repairs will only get worse if not properly fixed the first time.

3 Popular Types of Roofing Materials

Roofing material costs and installation costs are a deciding factor for some home owners when it comes to choosing roofing materials. Roofing materials vary in price, installation difficulty and price, warranty and life length.

Asphalt Shingles:
Today, asphalt shingles cover more residential roofs than any other material. Every year, 100 million squares are installed in the United States. That's ore than 258 square miles, about the size of Lake Tahoe.

Asphalt shingles' popularity is due to several factors. They're fire resistant and have the most color and textures. They're relatively inexpensive both to purchase and install. An experience Denver roofer can install 15-20 squares a day.

Wood Shakes:
Nothing looks like a wood roof except the real thing (even though roofing manufacturer's have tried a variety of products). Although wood roofs are more expensive materials and to install, many people think they look better.

Wood roofs are composed of either shingles and shakes, there are basic differences that set them apart. Wood shakes are thicker at the butt than shingles. Wood roofs are not only expensive to purchase, they are also more labor intensive to install. Because wood shakes and shingles are nailed onto a roof one at a time, it takes a while to cover a roof with wood. A fast Denver roofer can put on 2-4 squares of wood shakes on in a day.

Metal Roofs:
Metal roofing systems are no longer used for barns and mountain homes. The popularity in using metal roofs has led to manufacturers creating many colors and textures in metal materials. Improvements in both metal-coating processes and in waterproof fasteners have made metal roofing suitable for residential use. The increase in metal roofs being installed in the US is higher than any other roofing materials.

3 Typical Ways to Shingle A Valley

A lot of of today's new homes have a roofing system with numerous gables and roof configurations. When two roof planes meet at an inside corner of a roof, a valley is created. Valleys are exposed to an incredible deal of water so it truly is vital to create them as watertight as possible.

Regardless the method utilized to shingle the valley, a profitable installation begins with correct preparation. Taking the correct steps prior to applying your shingles will be the best approach to prevent roof leaks. Here are three main types of valleys used on residential roofing systems in the United States.

Woven Valley Style

-Shingles don't need to be cut
-Shingles don't rely on asphalt roof cement to be sealed
-interlocking weave provides double coverage
-Most weather and wind resistant

Open Metal Valley Style

Open metal valleys are probably the most decorative style of valley. They're used traditionally with wood shingles, tile or slate roofing although they can also work with asphalt shingles. Open valleys are most durable when lined with copper or steel.

Advantages:

-Variety of metals can be used to give different look
-Most decorative valley
-Works well with laminated shingles
-Very durable valley

Closed-Cut Valley

The nice thing about a closed-cut valley is the rate at which they can be installed and the fact that both sides of the roof don't need to be shingled at the same time. When you install a closed-cut valley you can cut after or during the installation. This valley is usually used with laminated or asphalt shingles.

Advantages:

-The two roof planes don't need to be shingled at the same time
-Cut valleys are quicker to install than weaving

Repairing A Wood Shake Roof

Posted by: Denver roofing

A wood shake or shingle roof can and should be repaired, anytime after its ten to fifteen years old. Some people foolishly claim that the life of a wood roof is only twenty years! Nonsense. A wood roof with care can and will last you forty plus years! After all, wood shake is a premium roofing material. To properly repair one, you first must understand the design of the roof.

A wood roofing system is made up of several thousand pieces of wood called shakes. Shakes come in a number of different sizes and grades, but the most common for residential single family homes is #1 grade medium sized. Medium sized shakes are usually twenty four inches long, and they are cut tapered, meaning that the bottom or "butt end" is thick and as you move up the length of the shake it gets thinner and thinner, all the way to the top. Now the shakes are laid in rows, starting at the bottom of the roof (right above the gutter), then progressive rows are laid overlapping the first row. The desired distance between rows is commonly ten inches. As the rows move up the coarse of the roof, they are staggered, so that the water will not be able to go under the rows below. At the top of the roof is the ridge cap, this is the weakest part of the roof, and usually wears out first.

Now that you know the layout of the roof, its time to learn what to look for in roof repairs. Since the ridge cap usually wears out first, it's a good idea to plan on replacing it. To do so, first it must be removed. The easiest way to do that is to start at the last piece that was installed, and remove from that end working your way to the first piece that was installed. Once removed, all old nails or staples need to be hammered back down. Then start laying the ridge caps at one end, nail each side twice. Be sure to nail far enough back, so that the next ridge piece covers the nails. The desired overlap is ten inches. Once the ridge is installed, you will need to inspect the field of the roof for any signs of damage (such as missing shakes, broken shakes or split shakes). One of the most important things to look for is exposed felt paper. The underlayment is not made to be exposed to the elements, so where ever that you can see it is normally bad. The top reasons for exposed underlayment are, Missing shake, broken shakes, split shakes and something know as burn thru. Burn thru happens when the water that is shed from rows above, drip on to the thin part of the shake, in between the two shakes above. Over time the flow of water can wear away that thin area of wood, exposing the felt underlayment. When this happens, there are two different ways to go about repairing it. Both are acceptable, the first way is to replace the entire shake. The second way is to insert a piece of sheet metal, under the shakes above, but over the top of the shake with the burn thru.

Once all the ridges are installed, and the necessary Denver roof repairs are made in the field of the roof, it's a good idea to check out the flashings. You will want to check the sealant around all vent pipes and chimney counter flashings. If they are cracked, a good silicone caulking is what is called for. After the pipes and flashings are sealed, paint the flashings and particularly the valley metal with quality rust inhibitor paint. After you have completed all that, your cedar shake roof should be in good shape for another three to five years. If you run in to any difficulty, one of our representatives would be happy to assist you.

10 Tips for Finding the Right Roofing Company

By Laine McKenna

1) Ask around. You value and trust the opinion of your friends. Have they had their roofs done within the last 10 years? Any problems? Do any of them have a roof that you would like to see on your home?

2) Contact your local Better Business Bureau. The BBB has strict criteria for membership, meaning you can be sure that any member listed will offer reliable service. The last thing you want to do is to pay someone and have them not finish the job, leaving you with a huge problem on your hands, and a gaping hole in your roof! Ask for a list of members in your area.

3) Use the information from your friends and the BBB to compile a list of potential roofing contractors. Don't just settle on one. Do some comparison shopping before awarding the job to a contractor. You want to do some interviewing before committing. Think of it as dating. You don't just marry the first person you meet! And if you plan to live in your house for as long as possible, then roofing will be a lifelong commitment too!

4) Ask for license information. The roofing companies in Denver should be able to provide you with a roofing license and this license should be for the state you reside in. Criteria for homes vary from state to state so it's important that Other companies may have contractor licenses, which will work fine, but you want someone who has a roofing license working on your home.

5) Ask about insurance. No one should set foot on your property to work if he or she is not insured. Ask for an insurance number. It would be a huge mistake (and liability) if you allowed someone to work up high, on top of your roof, without any sort of insurance coverage.

6) Ask for references. Most companies don't have a problem with this either. Don't just go off of what's on the company website. Ask for names and phone numbers, along with pictures. This will separate the roofing companies who stand by their work and the ones who just bounce around from job to job doing mediocre work.

7) Ask about options. A good roofing contractor should be able to offer a recommendation for your roof, rather than just doing the labor part of the job. Your contractor should discuss the pros and cons of different roofing systems and work with you to find a roofing system within your budget.

8) Ask for a free written estimate. Most companies are more than happy to provide this. Have the contractor come out to your home, rather than offering this over the phone. This will prevent any sudden surprises when the contractor shows up and says the job will require more than originally anticipated.

9) Ask about warranties. You want a roofing system that will last, so you can get your money's worth. Some companies will offer warranties on clay tile roofs for 50-100 years! Now that's getting real value out of your home!

10) Look for a design-oriented contractor, someone who has a keen eye for what will look best with your home. A good roofing contractor will be up-to-speed on the latest styles of roofing and techniques. After all, this isn't just about having a roof over your head - it's about having a roof with some real curb appeal!

Finding the Best Roofing Companies

It seems like roofing companies are everywhere these days. If you do a simple search on Google for "Denver roofing companies" you're going to get page after page of results. However, as with any other industry, there's a big difference in quality from one roofing company to the next, and it can be difficult to determine which companies are legitimate and which are scams.

Don't get fooled by advertisements for low prices and "too good to be true" promises. Getting your roof repaired - or getting a new roof installed - is going to be an investment. However, it's an investment that's absolutely worth it. If it feels like you're paying next to nothing, you are probably getting scammed with poor quality work or low quality materials.

So what's the best way to determine which roofing contractors are right for the job? Read below to find out.

What All Good Denver Roofing Companies Should Have

1. Accessible Representatives and Quality Customer Service. Contractors that care about your business are going to make themselves readily accessible to you. In addition, they're going to be committed to providing the best customer service possible. Your business should be valuable to them, and if they treat it any other way they aren't a good choice for you.

2. A Range of Specialties. Although it's not necessarily negative to find roofing repair contractors that specialize in just one or two types of repairs, it's generally better to find a company that can work with a wide range of situations and materials. The more your roofing repair contractors know how to do, the better.

3. Proper licensing and insurance. Without these documents, you could be held responsible for any accidents that occurred while the repair contractors are on the job. Any legitimate company will be able to produce the documents upon request, so be sure to ask to see them before committing to anything.

4. Better Business Bureau (BBB) Accreditation. This ensures that the roofing companies in Denver you're considering have met the standards of the BBB and are recognized as legitimate by this important organization.

5. Industry experience. Great customer service needs to be backed up by the right amount of experience. The length of time a company has been in the industry is a reflection of its competency and a good indicator of its capabilities.

There's a lot to consider as you search for the best roofing companies in Denver, but finding a quality roofing company is well worth your effort. Your roof is an incredibly valuable part of your home and making sure it's taken care of by your areas best is a necessity - not an option.

Fixing Your Rubber Roof - A Few Good Tips

I found this article about rubber roof repairs. We do not work with many rubber roofs in Houston but I know there are some of you who have rubber roofs who might need this information. Again, I think its a good article which is why Im using it in my blog. I hope you like it!

Many commercial establishments have a rubber roof on the tops of the buildings. These are popular choices due to the slope generally found on these structures. Most of the roofs used for commercial construction are flat. The challenge with this choice is how to protect the building from water damage.

Unlike sloping surfaces, a flat roof does not have the assistance of gravity to direct the water away from the surface. This is the main motivation for choosing rubber as a surface coating. Over time you will likely need to do some rubber roof repair to protect and extend the life of the surface.

All roofs will eventually leak. It is an unfortunate, yet indisputable fact. All roofing materials expand and contract on a daily basis in response to heat and humidity. The Actual Costs of A Metal Roof

Article Source: By Gavin Cruise

The metal roofing option has been around for a long time now; however, modern metal roofing structures, designs, and colors are more attractive, not to mention that a metal roof is more durable compared to other roofing options present today. When it comes to performance, a metal roof is absolutely at par with, if not better than the others. However, it is the actual metal roofing cost where the debate and discussion lies so make sure to get this clear in your roofing estimate.

In general, metal roofs such as metal roof shingles are elegant, lightweight, colorful, and durable. If you choose to use this material for your roof, then you will surely benefit in terms of sophistication, longevity, and durability. If you think these three elements are important, then metal roofs are a good choice; however, when you are in a tight budget, this roofing option can be a setback.

There are a lot of important factors to consider in determining the metal roofing cost. Generally, the actual cost is calculated per square foot. Professional roof installers usually make an estimate by computing the total area plus your roof pitch requirement, whenever applicable. For example, the price per square for metal roof of 6,500 sq ft with a moderate 8-inch roof pitch rising for every 12 inches is around $4.50.

This amount already includes interlock, labor, installation, and all the materials needed to install the whole system. The contract value for that particular job would cost around $29,250. This means you have to prepare around $30,000 for your house's roof. $30,000 is high compared to other roofing systems most American homeowners use in traditional construction.

Asphalt shingle, also a popular roofing system, would only cost around $1.5 to $2 for every square foot, giving you a total of $9,750 for everything. When compared to the metal roofing system, you can save around $19,500. However, it is a wise move to look at the bigger picture before concluding which is a better option.

A metal roofing system can last up to 50 years with very little maintenance. On the other hand, an average asphalt shingle can only last up to 10 years. Keep in mind that other roofing systems require a great deal of maintenance to reach the maximum lifespan of around 20 years. Assuming you decided to install asphalt singles, you should expect to renovate or perform repairs after 10 years, and renovation would definitely mean additional costs on your part.

This only shows that the metal roofing cost will eventually redeem itself. If you value endurance and permanence, then it is logical to say that the metal roofing system is the best option with the lowest cost. Yes, you might need to front a bigger cash outlay initially, but it definitely is worth it in the coming years. Now, with this very simple idea, it's up to you to make a choice.

Wood Shingle Installation

Cedar shingles are a much more attractive alternative to asphalt. With proper care wood shingles last longer and provide more protection than asphalt shingles. The key to proper wood cedar shake life is to protect them from moisture. Modern shingles are pressed and coated with water resistant material. The fact remains that water is most likely to cause damage to wood. Wood resists impact better than thin asphalt, but it cannot handle standing water.

For that reason, it is best to use wood roofing in dryer climates. In areas where hurricanes frequent, only some higher quality cedar decking passes residential code. These shingles actually resist updrafts much better than composition shingles. Roofing contractors in Denver tell me that the increased thickness of wood shake allows it to hold a stronger nail than composition staples. This kind of roofing material can withstand winds far beyond hurricane strength.

Homeowners considering wood shingles often worry about the fire hazard. Wood is naturally much more flammable than many other building materials like metal or concrete. To fireproof shingles, the wood is treated with a fire retardant. The shingles are also connected to a fire retardant material that provides additional protection while making sure burning embers do not start flying around in a fire.

A good hardwood excels in impact resistance. Old dry, weak shingles can split from hail impacts. The best way to combat this is to use a sealant around the wood. This will keep the wood from drying to a brittle state. Shingle roofs exposed to moderate impacts should not tear, fracture, or split. Roofing contractors in Denver use an industry standard to determine what kind of resistance the wood has by what diameter steel ball it can hold up under. In Colorado, you can get a discount on your homeowners insurance by using strong roofing. The insurance companies figure that they will have to pay less on hail storm damage.

When getting shingles installed from roofing contractors in Denver, make sure they are certified under state building licenses. Other than the strength, the finish is second strongest part of the roof.

Maybe your roof is still sagging, or possibly the roofing contractors left debris littered about your yard. Hopefully you asked about a ensure. Trustworthy roofing contractors will ensure your satisfaction. A quick phone call will result in them returning to your home to fix what ever operate doesn't meet your standards.

5. Not asking about system- Plainly put, some roofing contractors do the work incorrectly. In order to rush as a result of the work, they could possibly fire up their nail guns and haphazardly race through roof replacement. The difficulty with this is that nail guns should be carefully set in order to use on roofing shingles. When attaching shingles, it's essential not to hammer the nail in too deeply. Doing so will compromise the effectiveness of the shingle, causing leaks in your roof. Nail guns are so effective that they usually shoot the nail too deeply into the plywood decking. Solar Shingles

If you are considering solar power, or even if you need a new roof, solar shingles are something you should consider. The concept is just what the name says, it combines a solar cell in a traditional shingle instead of using large panels attached to your current roof. Solar shingles are much more attractive than cells, because they just look like shiny shingles.

Solar power is beneficial in two ways. One way is that it saves you money. With a good solar roof and well maintained grid, you may not even need any additional power. Some solar cells now actually sell excess power back to the grid. So you can actually be making money off your roof. The problem with solar shingles is that they are hard for Denver roofing repairs companies to find cheap shingle replacements.

Selling energy back to the grid also increases your effect of reducing carbon footprints. Solar energy is environmentally friendly because it does not take the combustion or use of any other energy than natural sunlight. All energy on the earth was created by the sun in some way. Oil and coal are made of ancient pressurized forests and organic products. These materials grew through photosynthesis, or converting sun energy into usable energy. Compare the efficiency of burning beds of plant matter that converted sunlight to energy millions of years ago to simply converting the energy yourself with a solar cell.

New thin solar shingles look just like asphalt shingles and can actually be integrated into a shingle roof. This is great for interior designers and Denver roofing companies that want to make an attractive roof. For simple installation, you can put the thin shingles over your current roof. You can also get custom shingles from your Denver roofing repairs company. These shingles will last about the same as composition shingles, or around 20 years. Over time in sunny areas, you can save money and make it over time. With a battery back-up, you will basically be self sufficient. Your own personal grid will be more effective than the commercial grid.

To really do our part in the energy crisis, everyone should install solar cells. This will greatly reduce our energy needs and reduce energy costs overall.
